Therapy for Trauma and PTSD
Trauma isn’t so much about what happened to you, it’s more about what you carry inside in response to that experience.
What is Trauma?
Trauma can arise from any event or experience that felt threatening to your sense of safety or existence. There are big T traumas, such as sexual or physical assault, serious accidents, combat, natural disasters or the sudden loss of a loved one. And there are little t traumas. These may not involve immediate physical danger, but they can still leave deep emotional wounds. Experiences like bullying, emotional neglect, chronic illness, financial stress or divorce can be just as impactful especially when they happen over time or pile up alongside one another.
How Trauma can affect your life
Both types of trauma can shape how we see ourselves and how safe we feel in the world. When that sense of safety is shaken, it can show up in many ways, including anxiety, depression, anger, shame, self-doubt, or difficulties in our relationships. At times, these painful feelings lead us to seek comfort in ways that don’t serve us well, such as alcohol or drug use.
How Trauma Therapy can help
Therapy offers a gentle and supportive path towards healing. It can help you make sense of what you’ve been through, understand how your experiences have shaped you, and begin to reconnect with a sense of inner safety again. For childhood trauma, therapy can be a big first step to at last feeling safe in the world.
Our Trauma-Informed Therapy Approaches
Several of our therapists have extensive experience in supporting people with trauma using thoughtful trauma-informed approaches. These include Lifespan Integration Therapy, which helps the nervous system integrate these past experiences, and Internal Family Systems therapy, which supports healing by gently working with different parts of the self.
